Our Support team
DAN THOMAS
Having been friends with Bryn for about 10 years now we have spent many a weekend trying to hurt ourselves doing various sports and outdoor pursuits. When Bryn recently told me that Darren and himself were thinking of doing the UK Everest Challenge I volunteered straight away, with the impression that I would be running up and down different peaks. However, Bryn forgot to tell me that it was meant to be a two-man challenge. I felt a little put out, but when he told me about the charities they are supporting I decided that to be in their support team will be just as rewarding as it will mean they can achieve their goal.
The charities we are supporting are very close to my heart as I am a former Royal Marine and I have a family member with Crohns. To do something to help these charities will give me a great sense of achievement.
I'D JUST LIKE TO ADD THAT, DAN WILL BE AS MUCH A PART OF THIS TEAM AS BRYN AND MYSELF. DAN HAS HIS PERSONAL GOALS AND WILL BE TRAINING WITH US REGULARLY. I'M PROUD HE'S HELPING US IN WHAT WILL BE A VITAL ROLE. AT THE END OF THE DAY IF INJURY HITS BRYN OR MYSELF DAN HAS TO STEP IN FOR OUR EVENT TO BE A SUCCESS - Darren
Dr STEWART BRUCE-LOW
Dr Bruce-Low is a senior lecturer and course leader for the Applied Sport Science Courses and associated pathways at Southampton Solent University. He is also the Laboratory Director where he is responsible for overseeing the smooth running of the Sport Science laboratories. His area of expertise is the Physiology of Exercise. His research interests include supporting elite athletes and occupational health where he has worked with the Fire Service for a number of years and is currently investigating the effects of exercise training on low back pain. He applies his knowledge through working with external groups such as the England Ladies football and rugby squads, GB rugby league, GB orienteering and several professional football clubs. His professional accreditation (Physiology Support) through the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) ensures he provides the most professional and appropriate support to the athletes he works with.
Helping both Bryn and Darren is an absolute pleasure. To make a difference (hopefully!) to two gentlemen who are in turn trying to make a difference to so many people is an absolute honour. We will be endeavouring to assess and guide both of them through the next 10 months with advice on nutrition, fitness and recovery strategies. This will hopefully mean they will feel (marginally?!) fitter and stronger when attempting the series of endurance events.
